Did the curse of “Jinx Mansion” follow Edna Cudahy to her next Hollywood home?

Alice Blackburn invited 150 people when she relocated her Hollywood bungalow to 2919 St. George in 1948.

Among the dozens of Whitley Heights homes lost to the Hollywood Freeway was 6785 Whitley Terrace, which has remained a mystery — until the discovery of this photograph! 6785 Whitley Terrace in 1924 (Bison Archives) Built in 1922, it was located at the fork in the road that led either down to Wedgewood Place (pictured above, foreground) or continuing along the Whitley Terrace loop.

This L-shaped stunner was the longtime residence of silent film star J. Warren Kerrigan, best remembered for Sampson (1914) and The Covered Wagon (1922). In 1918, he designed the Swiss Chalet bungalow for himself and his mother Sarah at 2307 Cahuenga Boulevard, “right where the hills bob and dip and form pockets for fields of beautiful flowers to nestle in,” described Motion Picture Magazine in 1918.

Not every Whitley Heights home in the freeway’s path was destroyed. A select few were relocated, both near (within the neighborhood) and far — 40 miles away in Huntington Beach, as was the case for 6793 Whitley Terrace. 6793 Whitley Terrace (LAPL) After 28 years at the corner of Iris Drive (where its front door was located; see below), in 1950 the three-bedroom Spanish Colonial Revival was severed in half vertically and transported from the Hollywood Hills to Orange County.
